Third Year Studio // Competition Project on the concept of 'Integration' within design - taught through a competition to cater for an NGO brief in Arequipa, Peru. Individual proposal was awarded joint 1st position.

NGO Brief: In response to the relatively poor standard of diet and teaching of nutrition, an incentive to provide schools across Peru with sustainable teaching facilities has been derived to improve the standard of health in poorer areas. The competition sought after a flexible kitchen & dining proposal that can be integrated into schools across the area to host cooking classes and provide a healthy dining environment for children in the area.

Concept: The competition proposal expanded beyond the brief's initial requirements and looked to create a communal hub within a school environment - somewhere that could cater for and beyond the kitchen environment for all interests of the community, which required something that respected the local traditions and character of the area to be truly integrated. There is also a degree of social unbalance that was investigated by tackling gender & age discrimination, looking to incorporate a sense of democracy within the design.

Proposal: Entitled 'La Cinta Mecanica de Color', the proposal used a Meccano-like structure from recycled aluminium frames to create a suspended canopy over a free roaming space, an open provision for multiple uses. The structure proposed lends towards an endless amount of varieties to the form, allowing it to adapt to the situation and be integrated across multiple sites. The concept of colour forms an integral part of the project - not just through the suspended Peruvian rugs across the ceiling, but also in the painted frame that uses colour to define the structural composition of the projects - allowing for easy assembly which targets the inclusion of women and children in activities they are typically segregated from in the local community.
